Voorhees recognized as Tom Joyner School of the Month
April 12, 2010
Voorhees College has been selected as the Tom Joyner School of the Month for April 2010.
Voorhees' goal is to raise an additional $100,000 to provide scholarships to deserving students in collaboration with the Tom Joyner Foundation, a major driving force in raising money for historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) since 1998.
The foundation, formed by the nationally syndicated radio personality Tom Joyner, said Voorhees College was chosen as part of its on-going effort to assist HBCUs in broadening and strengthening their efforts to raise money to help keep students attending these institutions.
As one of the Tom Joyner Foundation Schools of the Month, Voorhees College will receive funds raised from listeners, alumni and other interested parties during the month of April. Throughout the month, the Tom Joyner Morning Show, aired in 115 markets around the country that reaches nearly eight million listeners every week, will aggressively promote Voorhees College.
Voorhees College has been recognized nationally for its first ever debate team, which made history as one of only two Historically Black Colleges and Universities selected to participate in the first Inauguration Debate Series, which was held at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. as part of the events celebrating the inauguration of 44th President Barack H. Obama.
In addition, Voorhees is the only historically black college in South Carolina with a Center of Excellence in Rural and Minority Health designed to investigate and combat health disparities in Bamberg County.
Voorhees offers degrees in accounting, biology, business administration, criminal justice, English, health and recreation, mathematics, mass communications and organizational management.
"The foundation is happy to work with Voorhees College," said Tom Joyner, the foundation's chairman. "The college has a wonderful history, and this foundation is all about making sure students are able to stay in school."
Dr. Cleveland L. Sellers Jr., president of Voorhees College, said the college is looking forward to a successful campaign with the Tom Joyner Foundation.
"The Tom Joyner Foundation has a strong history of providing support to HBCUs," said Sellers. "I know that Voorhees will meet our goal of raising $100,000 in scholarship money with the help of the foundation."
The foundation has raised more than $25 million over the past seven years to help thousands of students at some 80 colleges.
