Division of Social Sciences

Welcome to the Division of Social Sciences at Voorhees College, home of passionate and interdisciplinary teaching, scholarship and civic engagement.  Our collective vision for teaching and learning stems from a belief that the process of educating is an extension of the socialized values that are first taught in the homes of students.  Therefore, our faculty reinforced and connects students’ socialized values to their social responsibilities in hopes that the student becomes a more productive citizen.  This belief of ours is central to the idea that content knowledge is not the only outcome in educating students.  We strive to teach and model to our students the values that we believe produces a valued-centered life.  We understand that the process of education has evolved, to which faculty must become facilitators of knowledge who encourage and enable students to become responsible for their own learning.  We contend that learning is not a “cookie-cutter” process and each student learns in a different ways. Therefore, through continuous faculty development and scholarship we engage the use technology and other teaching tools to different learning modalities that guide and support our students towards becoming the following:

Collaborative thinkers
  •  Who exhibit good listening and analytical/sympathetic reading skills; and
  • Who share their ideas and support others in developing their own ideas.

Effective communicators

  • Who can write and speak effectively and convey information visually; and
  • Who can organize their thoughts and reasoning and contextualize their messages.

Reflective practitioners

  • Who think independently and learn how to fall in love with learning; and
  •  Who creatively considers significant factors of issues (through personal reflection, posing questions, examining assumptions, and exploring alternative perspectives); and
  • Who critically assess evidence?

Our faculty offers high-quality instruction in four majors: African American Studies, Criminal Justice, Emergency Management, and Sociology.  Any major can be your minor, and we also offer minors in cyber security, finance, general business, management, and marketing. The breadth of our offerings allows students to tailor their education to their career plans, whether you're interested in Sociology with an emphasis on marketing or criminal justice with an eye toward homeland security.

Your Voorhees experience won't end with studies in your major, though. Our honors program will challenge your intellect even further, and you'll also have a chance to be involved in research and internships.

We're confident that you'll find the program that fits your needs at Voorhees. Much of the information about our majors is on our Web site, but if you have further questions, please give us a call at (803) 780-1099. Or if you're on campus, stop by our office in Room 132, St. James Building. We'll be happy to talk with you about options that will fit your goals.
