Upward Bound is a federally funded program that helps low-income high school students who will be the first in their families to go to college. Through Upward Bound, teens come to the Voorhees College campus many times during their high school years, starting when they're freshmen. They'll learn what they'll need to succeed after high school – from how to apply to college or for financial aid, to extra academic help and career fairs. There also are social opportunities with their peers, as well as cultural trips. Most importantly, they'll develop the confidence and skills they'll need to achieve their dreams.
If this sounds good to you, and you attend Bamberg-Ehrhardt High, Barnwell High, Blackville-Hilda High, or Denmark-Olar High, give us a call at 803-780-1299 to learn more. We'll be happy to tell you what you need to do to become a part of Upward Bound. You also can download an application packet.
Fall and Spring Academic Sessions
Upward Bound participants will be invited to the Voorhees campus on Saturdays during the spring and fall for extra instruction in literature, composition, reading, math and science. Transportation and meals are provided. There's also a chance for fun through recreational programs, as well as for trips to college fairs on other campuses. Those who want additional help can come to Voorhees between 3:30 and 6 p.m. Wednesday evenings.
During the summer, Upward Bound hosts students for a six-week introduction to college life at Voorhees. The teens live on campus and can take advantage of tutoring, counseling and a range of activities. There are trips out of town and out of state. Past students have had the opportunity to visit Cincinnati, where they've seen the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Other groups have gone to Washington, DC, where they've toured the White House, the National Nuclear Security Administration and various memorials. They've seen the sites in Atlanta, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Center and the Georgia Aquarium. All excursions include visits to colleges and universities as well.
The Bridge Component
Between the end of high school and the start of college, Upward Bound students get the chance to sample college-level work and more life on campus through the Bridge Component. It's designed to help teens with the transition to college.
