Voorhees holds its annual coronation

Voorhees will hold its 2012 coronation for queen-elect, Jasmine Bethune, and king-elect, Chuka Ufomadu on Friday, September 21 in the Leonard E. Dawson Health and Human Resources Center. The theme for this year's coronation is, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow Dreams Come True."  

Jasmine Janay Bethune, Miss Voorhees College 2012-2013, is a 21-year-old resident of Pinewood, S.C. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bethune Jr. of Pinewood. Also, Jasmine is currently a senior majoring in business administration.  

Determined to pave a way to success, Bethune decided to follow in the footsteps of her older brother, Walter A. Bethune III, who is a graduate of Voorhees College. "Voorhees is my family's alma mater, and I will continue to follow the legacy and footprints of my predecessors," Bethune said.  

After receiving a bachelor's degree in business administration from Voorhees, she plans to return to her native home, Miami, Fla., to attend Florida International University to receive a master's degree in finance. Determined to excel in both academics and extracurricular activities, Jasmine is a Presidential Scholar, and she has various academic honors, such as being a Dean's List student since her freshman year and named Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. She has continued to lead by serving in various leadership roles throughout her matriculation at Voorhees including Student Government Association Assistant Secretary 2010-2011 and Student Government Association Secretary 2011-2012.  

Her extracurricular activities include the Voorhees College Cheerleading Squad, where she serves as captain, the Elizabeth Evelyn Wright Culture Club, the Iota Mu chapter of Delta Mu Delta International Honor Society in Business Administration and the Eta Nu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.  

Chuka Konrad Ufomadu, is a 21-year-old native of Abia State, Nigeria. Chuka graduated from high school in 2007 at the age of 16 with a burning desire to obtain a college degree in the United States. The only way he could make his dream a reality was to make a high score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). After much preparation, Chuka made a high score on the SAT which earned him a Dean's Scholarship at Voorhees College. He arrived at the United States from Nigeria on January 6, 2010.  

Since coming to the United States, Chuka has dedicated himself to scholarly and community service based ventures. In February 2010, Chuka, along with some additional students, established the Rotaract Club of Voorhees College, which currently serves as the premier community service organization in Denmark, SC.  

Currently pursuing a degree in accounting, Ufomadu currently hold a grade point average of 3.9. He is a member of the Iota Mu Chapter of Delta Mu Delta International Business Honors Society and the Eta Iota Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., where he serves as the current treasurer.  

After graduating, Chuka plans to pursue a master's degree in business administration with a concentration in international business.
