Office of Alumni Affairs
Welcome Home
We hope your relationship with Voorhees doesn’t end with your graduation. You can stay connected to the university by participating in one of our alumni chapters across the country or by visiting the campus during one of the year’s many special events. You’re also welcome to return to work with students as a guest speaker or lecturer – you’ll serve as a wonderful example of what they, too, can achieve with a degree from Voorhees. You financial support is important as well. It’s donations such as yours that help today’s students and tomorrow’s graduates realize their dreams.
If you’re looking to reconnect with your undergraduate and need anything at all, please get in touch with our Alumni Affairs office. Call us at (803) 780-1191 or email dsmiling@voorhees.edu.
Annual Alumni Events
The Legacy Dinner
Also a part of Fall Orientation, the Legacy Dinner is an opportunity for new students to enjoy a formal evening with their classmates, faculty and staff. The keynote speaker is a recent Voorhees graduate – someone close to the new students’ age who can be a testament to what’s possible with a Voorhees University education. Other alumni are invited to join in the evening as well.
Mr. & Miss Voorhees Coronation
Held in September, the coronation installs the students who will reign as Mr. and Miss Voorhees for the next year. Mr. and Miss Voorhees, who are elected by a vote of the student body, serve as the University’s official host and hostess. Students who enter the pageant must have demonstrated leadership ability and good character. They also must be have a record of involvement in University activities and community life, as well as a solid academic record.
Held in November, Homecoming Weekend includes class reunions, alumni meetings, social gatherings, a parade and basketball. It’s a chance for graduates to renew acquaintances and connect with current students as well.
Founder’s Day Convocation
The University’s annual salute to Elizabeth Evelyn Wright-Menafee is held in April, the same month she founded Voorhees in 1897. Wright-Menafee, a black woman in her early 20s, battled betrayals, arson, jealousies and threats to establish the school.
