On July 9, 2021, Dr. Ronnie Hopkins was officially appointed by the Board of Trustees as the tenth president of Voorhees College, Denmark, South Carolina, USA. During his productive and progressive career in public and higher education for nearly three decades, Dr. Hopkins has served in a number of administrative and instructional positions which involve supervision of faculty, staff, students, budgeting, and strategic planning. Prior to serving as Interim President, Dr. Hopkins was appointed as the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Accreditation Liaison and a tenured Professor of English at Voorhees College. Formerly, he served as the Founding Dean of the Freshman Institute and Professor of English, Chair and Professor of English in the Department of English, Foreign Languages and Mass Communication, Dean of the School of Continuing Education, Graduate Studies and Lifelong Learning, and Founding Dean of the School of Honors at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. Additionally, Dr. Hopkins served as Chair and Professor of English for the Department of English and Foreign Languages at Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Vice President for Student Affairs at Allen University, Columbia, South Carolina. Dr. Hopkins actively serves as an On-Site Reaffirmation Committee Evaluator for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Dr. Hopkins is a member in the Class of 2020 Executive Leadership Academy sponsored by the American Academic Leadership Institute for preparation of experienced college cabinet officers to become successful presidents and chancellors. He has authored over $40 million dollars in grant awards to advance higher education priorities. 

Dr. Hopkins earned the Doctor of Philosophy degree in English in 1994 and the Master of Arts degree in English in 1991 from Michigan State University respectively. Also, he has completed postdoctoral studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1995). His foundation in English studies came from North Carolina Central University where he earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in English with Secondary Teaching certification in 1986. Additionally, he has been conferred the Doctor of Humane Letters (LLD) Honoris Causa from Saint Monica University in Buea, Cameroon, Central West Africa in May 2016. 

Dr. Hopkins is Founder and CEO of Possible Worlds Foundation, Incorporated, a non-profit organization that provides full-service career strategic directions and opportunities in education and employment for disenfranchised citizens impacted by homelessness, incarceration, and HIV/AIDS. 

Dr. Hopkins has provided educational guidance and leadership advancement for underrepresented students across a number of interdisciplinary fields. Dr. Hopkins’ significant teaching experiences include English Language Arts teaching at the middle school, high school, community college, and university. His academic specializations include the Critical Issues in the Teaching of English, Reading and Composition Theory, and African American Language and Literacy. Dr. Hopkins is the author of Educating Black Males: Critical Issues in Schooling, Community and Power (State University of New York Press: Albany, 1997) among other scholarly journal articles. Dr. Hopkins co-published Leadership Challenges at Historically Black Colleges and Universities: The Benefits of Collaboration is featured in Psychology and Education Journal: An Interdisciplinary Journal. 

Dr. Hopkins has provided academic and student leadership fostering students’ personal development, endorsement of life-long learning and continuing education, community and world service, and preparation for an ever-changing global society. He is a Fulbright-Hays and Mellon international scholar. Dr. Hopkins’ synergistic activities include international scholarly research and presentations at Monrovia, Liberia, Saint Monica University, Buea, Cameroon, Central West Africa, the University of Technology at Quibdo, Choco, South America; Guilan, Beijing, and Shanghai, Republic of China; University of Ghana-Legon, Accra, Ghana, West Africa, Merida, Mexico, and Ocho Rios, Jamaica; Cape Town, South Africa. Additionally, he is Founder and Senior Artistic Director for NGOMA African Cultural Performance Troupe, founded in 1994 at Norfolk State University and continued to present. 

Also, Dr. Hopkins is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, the first African American, inter-collegiate Greek-letter fraternity. Dr. Hopkins is a member of the Bible Way Church of Atlas Road in Columbia, South Carolina USA. He has served as a Member of Board Directors of the South Carolina African American Heritage Foundation, Board of Directors for the University of South Carolina’s McKissick Museum, Commissioner of the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission, Member of the Board of Directors and as an International Ambassador for the National Association of African American Studies and Affiliates (NAAAS), Board of Directors for the Midlands Community Development Corporation (MCDC), Chairman of the Board of Directors Boys House Foster Care Program in Columbia, USA, and Board of Directors for the Joseph H. Neal Wellness Center, formerly, South Carolina HIV/AIDS Council.
