Voorhees Professor Leads Student-Athlete Substance Abuse and Opioid Prevention Education Forum at Dillard University

DENMARK, SC – Voorhees University continues its commitment to student health, safety, and wellness through impactful community engagement. Dr. Marcus Amos, Professor of Sport Management, served as a featured presenter at a critical health and wellness forum hosted by the Department of Athletics at Dillard University on January 23, 2026, at 6:00 p.m.

Titled “Saving Lives! Student-Athlete Substance Abuse / Opioid Prevention Education,” the workshop addressed the growing opioid and fentanyl crisis and its impact on athletes—particularly in the context of injury rehabilitation. The session explored patterns of prescription and illicit drug use in sports, highlighting the risks of addiction, accidental overdoses, and fatalities among high school, collegiate, and professional athletes.

The forum also provided lifesaving education on overdose-response medications and emphasized proactive prevention strategies, including mental health awareness, therapeutic interventions, and support systems designed to reduce high-risk behaviors among student-athletes.

“This type of education is essential for protecting the physical and mental well-being of our student-athletes,” said Dr. Amos. “By increasing awareness, addressing stigma, and equipping athletes and athletic staff with knowledge and resources, we can help prevent tragic and avoidable losses.”

The collaborative event underscores the shared commitment of Voorhees University and Dillard University to advancing health education, athlete advocacy, and community-based prevention initiatives across higher education.
