Denmark, SC, — Voorhees University will host its annual Baccalaureate and Hooding Ceremony honoring the Class of 2026 on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. The ceremony will take place on the second floor of Wright/Potts Library on the University’s campus.
This meaningful academic tradition serves as a formal and reflective milestone for graduating seniors as they prepare to transition from students to alumni. The Baccalaureate Ceremony provides an ecumenical setting in which graduates begin completing their academic regalia, symbolizing both their scholarly achievements and their connection to the institution from which they have earned their degrees.
Serving as the featured speaker is Darrell Jackson Sr., a distinguished leader, pastor, and longtime member of the South Carolina Senate.
A native of Columbia, South Carolina, Senator Jackson earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Benedict College, where he served as Student Government Association President and was recognized as the Most Distinguished Student. He later earned a Master of Arts degree from Columbia International University and has received multiple honorary doctorates, including from Benedict College, Columbia International University, and Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.
Senator Jackson has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to public service and civic engagement. He served as a Commissioner for Richland County School District One before being elected to the South Carolina Senate in 1992, becoming at that time the youngest African American elected to the body. He continues to serve District 21, representing Richland County. In addition to his legislative service, he is the senior pastor of Bible Way Church of Atlas Road in Columbia, South Carolina.
“Baccalaureate is one of the most significant and reflective moments in the academic journey of our students,” said Dr. Ronnie Hopkins, President and CEO of Voorhees University. “We are honored to welcome Senator Jackson, whose life of leadership, service, and faith will inspire our graduates as they step into their next chapter.”
The ceremony is open to graduates, their families, and invited guests as the University community gathers to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2026 and reflect on the journey ahead.
