Voorhees University Center of Excellence for Research and Program Innovation Hosts 2025 VU Research Symposium Day

Denmark, SC – Voorhees University Center of Excellence for Research and Program Innovation (CERPI) proudly hosted its first VU Research Symposium Day on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at the Wright-Potts Library, located at 5480 Voorhees Road in Denmark, South Carolina. Organized under the leadership of Dr. Zhabiz Golkar, the event brought together undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and campus leaders to showcase and celebrate research excellence across the university, with a strong emphasis on STEM fields.

This year’s symposium welcomed over 50 attendees and presenters, and featured an engaging lineup of oral and poster presentations delivered by Voorhees University students and faculty. Presenters shared original research and case reports that reflected both academic rigor and the university’s commitment to scholarly inquiry. The event provided a dynamic platform for the exchange of ideas, peer collaboration, and mentorship, and was designed to enhance research visibility while encouraging student participation in scholarly activities.

Keynote remarks were delivered by Dr. Aisha Thomas, whose address inspired participants to remain curious, committed, and courageous in their academic pursuits. Dr. Thomas’ insights emphasized the importance of research as a tool for social progress and innovation, particularly within underrepresented communities.
“Our goal with the VU Research Symposium Day is to create a space where research is not only presented but celebrated,” said Dr. Golkar. “We are thrilled to see the creativity, dedication, and potential of our student researchers, especially those pursuing STEM disciplines.”

The event underscores Voorhees University’s broader mission to support academic excellence, foster innovation, and cultivate a community of future leaders prepared to address the complex challenges of tomorrow.

CERPI appreciates the support provided by W. Franklin Evans Honors College – Higher Education Workforce Development (HEWD) program and Voorhees University industry partners–e.g. IBM during the event.
