Voorhees University GEAR UP Students Featured in Transformative Statewide Exhibition at the South Carolina State Museum

Denmark, S.C. — September 17, 2025 — Voorhees University proudly announces a milestone achievement for its Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) students, who will be featured in a landmark one-year exhibition at the South Carolina State Museum. The exhibition, When I See Myself, I See…, highlights the power of representation, creativity, and student achievement through an inspiring STEAM-based arts collaboration.

The exhibition will have a soft launch on Saturday, September 20, 2025, followed by an official reception and press conference on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 6 p.m.

GEAR UP is a federally funded initiative that equips low-income students with the tools, mentoring, and resources needed to excel in education and career readiness. The program serves students across 10 South Carolina school districts, including Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Calhoun, Chester, Colleton, Edgefield, Hampton, Orangeburg, and Williamsburg counties, as well as the High School for Health Professions.

When I See Myself, I See… began as a creative vision developed by Voorhees University GEAR UP Project Director Ms. Tiffany Leaf and Graduation Coach Kendrick Wright, in collaboration with renowned artist and storyteller Natalie Daise. Students participating in the project reflected on the central question, “Who do I see when I see myself?” — resulting in a powerful collection of painted portraits, personal essays, and original student artwork.

The initiative has already touched lives across South Carolina, with portrait unveilings and  student interviews featured on SCETV and the publication of a commemorative book.

“This exhibition is more than an art display,” said Ms. Tiffany Leaf. “It is a testament to the power of representation, self-reflection, and the belief that no matter the circumstance, every student has the right to see themselves capable of greatness.”

By bringing together families, schools, and communities, Voorhees University’s GEAR UP program continues to fulfill its mission of improving academic performance, increasing graduation rates, and broadening student knowledge of college and career opportunities.

The When I See Myself, I See… exhibition is open to the public and will remain on display at the South Carolina State Museum for one year.  For more information, go to  When I See Myself, I See . . . | South Carolina State Museum
