Shreveport, LA – The Voorhees Tigers men’s outdoor track team made history April 12, 2025 with an impressive showing which earned them the newly named HBCUAC Men’s Outdoor Championship. The championship was the inaugural one for the previously named Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.
Tiger head coach Jeffrey Hughes, who was elated by the performance of his team which emerged as outdoor champions in its inaugural season of the newly-named league, earned Coach of the Year honors.
The Voorhees Tigers emerged as champions during their first HBCUAC season at the Shreveport, LA competition (Apr. 11-12, 2025) thanks to exceptional performances by their standout athletes.

Sprinter Damarion Alexander was the star performer during the Tigers’ impressive outing. He won the 100 meters. He also earned gold in the 200 meters and anchored the Tigers’ 4x100m relay team (Parris Hawkins, Sanaljay Bentley, Drewmel Banks and Alexander) that finished first.
Also capturing first place finishes for Coach Hughes’ team were Jaylen Ransom on in the hammer throw and Jayden Burris in the triple jump.
Hughes, in reflecting on his team’s accomplishments at the event, saluted the effort and expressed his pride in the achievement.
“This championship holds tremendous significance for our team and the entire Voorhees University family,” said Hughes. “The inaugural HBCUAC season remains unforgettable as we secured the championship, and the achievements of these young men filled me with immense pride.”
Voorhees Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Charlene Johnson also noted the accomplishment.
“The Tigers’ win establishes Voorhees as a dominant force on both the HBCUAC and national stages while signaling their promising trajectory,” Johnson said.
