Voorhees University Names James Williams Head Men’s Basketball Coach

DENMARK, South Carolina – Voorhees University announced the hiring of their head men’s basketball coach Wednesday.

James Cornelius Williams was named the head coach for the Tigers, effective immediately, during a press conference held at Voorhees University. He is a native of Augusta, Georgia and graduated from the Statesboro/Bulloch County School System. He most recently served as the Voorhees assistant men’s basketball coach, as well as an academic success coach.

In a statement made by Athletic Director, Charlene Johnson, “I am confident that Coach Williams will be the leader our athletes need both on and off the court to take them to the next level of excellence here at Voorhees University.” Noting Williams’ impressive fifty-two wins during his tenure as head coach at Charles R. Drew Charter School in Atlanta, Georgia, she added, “He has a record of building character within the team as he prepares them for their successes.” Williams was the first coach to lead the men’s basketball team to a winning season in the school’s history.

In accepting the head coaching responsibility, Williams said, “Now that God has given me this opportunity as head coach, I am committed to build not just a team of athletes, rather, I seek to build a team of men with character who will use their skills and abilities to help shape a better world.”

Williams also has previous coaching experience at Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi, Kings Ridge Christian School in Alpharetta, Georgia, and the Reach Higher Kings AAU Program, where he served as head coach and athletic director.

Voorhees University president and CEO, who was out of the country, expressed his support of Williams’ appointment in a statement that read, in part, “On behalf of the Voorhees University Board of Trustees, I am pleased to support the appointment of Mr. James Williams as head coach of the men’s basketball team. Based on his proven drive, experience, commitment, and passion for the development and success of students, I have every confidence that Coach Williams will advance our men’s basketball team to the Next Level of Excellence.”

Williams replaces Cabral Huff, who led the men Tigers team since January 2021.
