Voorhees University Receives Transformational $19 Million Gift from Philanthropist Mackenzie Scott

DENMARK, S.C. – Voorhees University is proud to announce a transformative $19 million gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. This remarkable investment is the largest donation in the university’s history.

This latest contribution follows a $4 million gift in 2020, received just two months prior to the appointment of Dr. Ronnie Hopkins as President and CEO of Voorhees University. MacKenzie Scott’s decision to provide additional support reflects its recognition of Voorhees’ outstanding growth, innovation, and sustained impact over the past several years.

Since 2020, Voorhees has achieved significant milestones, including its transition from college to university status and the expansion of its academic portfolio to offer master’s and doctoral degree programs. Voorhees also holds the distinction of being the only Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the nation to be a charter school authorizer, extending its commitment to education from early learning through advanced degrees.

“This generous gift from Ms. MacKenzie Scott is a resounding affirmation of the extraordinary work being done at Voorhees University,” said Dr. Ronnie Hopkins, President and CEO of Voorhees University. “It strengthens our ability to fulfill our vision as a leading faith-based, career-focused institution that transforms lives and communities. These funds will allow us to build on our momentum—supporting our students, expanding our reach, and securing Voorhees’ future for generations to come.”
In alignment with the university’s mantra, “The Next Level of Excellence,” and strategic plan, the $19 million investment will support endowment growth, student recruitment and retention, scholarships, and deferred maintenance, ensuring long-term institutional sustainability and continued academic excellence.

David Miller (Class of ‘84), Chairman of the Voorhees University Board of Trustees, praised the magnitude and meaning of this moment: “This extraordinary contribution validates the collective efforts of our students, faculty, alumni, community, and leadership. It also recognizes Voorhees University as a model of innovation and resilience among HBCUs. We are deeply grateful to Ms. Scott for her confidence in our mission and her belief in the power of education to change lives.”

Voorhees University, founded in 1897, continues to build on its historic legacy of providing accessible, high-quality education rooted in faith, excellence, and service. This new chapter of investment will further enhance the university’s ability to deliver transformative learning experiences and strengthen its role as a beacon of opportunity in higher education.
