Voorhees University to Host Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Campus and Community Connection Point

DENMARK, S.C. – Voorhees University will host a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to launch the new Campus and Community Connection Point on Thursday, May 8 at 11:00 a.m. at the Wright Potts Library, located at 5480 Voorhees Rd., Denmark, SC 29042.

This new initiative, made possible through a partnership with the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce (SC DEW) and SC Works, is designed to serve students, alumni, and the surrounding community by providing access to essential career services and resources.

The Connection Point is a fully equipped computer lab offering assistance with job searches, access to thousands of employment listings, and guidance on applying for unemployment insurance benefits. It will be open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and is available at no cost to users.

“This resource center is a major step forward in our mission to prepare students not just for graduation, but for life and leadership,” said Dr. Ronnie Hopkins, President of Voorhees University. “The Connection Point represents our commitment to empowering our campus and community with the tools they need to thrive in today’s competitive workforce.”

By hosting a Connection Point on campus, Voorhees University strengthens its relationship with SC DEW, SC Works, and the Lower Savannah Workforce Development Area. The center aligns with the university’s strategic focus on workforce development, community engagement, and student success.

“Hosting this Connection Point is an important milestone in rural workforce access,” said Cathy Scarborough, Founding Director of the Rural Community Development Institute. “This center will help ensure that students and residents in rural communities like Denmark are not left behind in the changing job market. It’s about access, opportunity, and empowerment.”

Connection Points exist across more than 150 locations in South Carolina, including libraries, faith-based organizations, and nonprofits. Voorhees University is proud to join this statewide network dedicated to connecting citizens with employment opportunities and support services.
