Voorhees University TRIO Student Support Services Program to Host 6th Annual First-Generation College Student Celebration

DENMARK, S.C. – Voorhees University’s TRIO Student Support Services Program (TRIO SSSP) will host its 6th Annual First-Generation College Student Celebration on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, from 2–4 p.m. at Voorhees University in the Pecan Grove.

This year’s event will honor the 60th anniversary of the Higher Education Act of 1965, landmark legislation that emerged from President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty and expanded access to higher education for underrepresented students. The celebration—also known nationally as First-Gen Day—recognizes and applauds students who are the first in their families to attend college.

Supported nationwide by the Center for First-Generation Student Success, the National Association of Student Affairs Professionals (NASPA), and the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE), First-Gen Day highlights the resilience, determination, and achievements of first-generation students across the country.

The Voorhees University TRIO SSSP invites all members of the campus community to join in this meaningful celebration of first-generation scholars. The event will be hosted by TRIO SSSP members, with special remarks from university officials, first-generation students, and TRIO alumni.

Attendees will enjoy performances by the Black Sapphire Dance Team, VU Band, VU Cheerleaders, The Cultural Icons, VU Tigeraires, and Greek fraternities and sororities, along with music by DJ “The Guice Show.” The celebration will also feature games, food trucks, and a 360° photo booth, creating an atmosphere of joy, unity, and pride.

“Voorhees University takes great pride in celebrating our first-generation college students,” said Mr. Adrian West, Vice President for Student Affairs. “Their commitment and perseverance embody the very spirit of Voorhees University and reflect our mission of academic excellence and opportunity.”

The TRIO Student Support Services Program, under the Division of Student Affairs, continues its mission of empowering students to achieve academic success, personal growth, and lifelong learning.
