Denmark, SC – Voorhees University celebrates a historic victory as its Computer Science students secured first place in the Cybersecurity Competition at the 2025 ADMI Symposium held in Charlotte, North Carolina. This remarkable achievement marks Voorhees University’s debut in the competition, making the victory even more significant.

The winning team comprised four outstanding students: Ashley Chambers, Shemar Stewart, Izayah Rahming, and Yuraida Godinez. Competing against renowned institutions such as Morehouse College, Spelman College, Florida A&M University (FAMU), and North Carolina Central University, the team demonstrated exceptional skill, determination, and intellectual prowess.

“This victory is a testament to the Next Level of Excellence that Voorhees University students embody,” said advisor and mentor, Dean Cheryl Swanier. “For our students to compete at such a high level in their first-ever participation at the ADMI Conference and emerge victorious is truly phenomenal. It not only highlights the talent and dedication of our students but also brings national recognition to Voorhees University’s growing reputation in cybersecurity and computer science.”

The Association of Computer Science Departments at Minority Institutions (ADMI) convenes this annual symposium to examine critical computing issues affecting minority students, education, and institutions. The 2025 ADMI Symposium, held in-person, featured undergraduate and graduate research with a focus on innovation in computing. This year’s theme, “Enhancing AI Capacity at Minority Serving Institutions,” emphasized the growing role of artificial intelligence in technology education and development.

Beyond the competitions, the ADMI Symposium serves as a key platform for fostering collaboration among minority institutions, major research universities, and industry leaders. Faculty and students present research papers, engage in poster presentations, and explore graduate school opportunities.

The symposium’s competitions allow students to test and showcase their computing expertise in a competitive yet supportive environment. Voorhees University’s first-place finish in the Cybersecurity Competition underscores the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and preparing students for careers in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

Voorhees University looks forward to continued participation in future competitions and further opportunities to showcase the exceptional capabilities of its students on national and global stages.
