Voorhees University’s Center of Excellence for Research and Program Innovation, Receives Faculty Student Research Awards from SCICU

Denmark, S.C. – Voorhees University proudly announces that its Center of Excellence for Research and Program Innovation (CERPI) has received the Research Awards totaling $17,267.47, for the 2025–2026 academic year. This funding, provided by the Belle W. Baruch Foundation and sponsored through the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU), supports three innovative and high-impact student-faculty research projects.

These projects are under the direction of Dr. Zhabiz Golkar, Endowed Professor of Biology who serves as the Principal Investigator and research advisor. Each project exemplifies the university’s commitment to advancing student-led research that addresses critical health and biomedical challenges:

In-vitro Investigation of Fractions/Components of Calendula officinalis by Bioassay Guided Method on Multidrug Resistant Strains Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

This study explores the antimicrobial potential of natural plant extracts to combat resistant bacterial infections—a growing concern in global health.

The Study of Bacteriophages as a Therapeutic Strategy in Combating Propionibacterium acnes Bacterium

Focusing on an alternative to antibiotic treatment for acne, this project examines the use of viruses that infect bacteria (bacteriophages) as a targeted therapy.

A Study Design for Collaborative Research on the Oral Microbiome – Oral Microbiomes Reveal Concerning Patterns of Specific Bacteria Associated with Parkinson’s Disease
This forward-thinking initiative seeks to understand the links between oral bacteria and neurological health, particularly their potential role in Parkinson’s disease.

“These projects not only enrich the academic experience for our students but also place Voorhees University at the forefront of undergraduate biomedical research in South Carolina,” said Dr. Golkar. “We are grateful to SCICU and the Belle W. Baruch Foundation for their continued investment in student success and innovation.”

Voorhees University remains dedicated to fostering a research-rich environment where students can actively engage in addressing real-world issues through rigorous scientific inquiry and interdisciplinary collaboration.
